Summer is here are you ready?   Here you will find some helpful tips to summer-ize your home. These helpful tips will help you cut down on your cooling bills and allow you more time to enjoy those summer months.
 

Check Exterior Windows, Doors and screens

  • Clean screens and repair or replace if needed
  • Tighten and lubricate door hinges and closers (doors may have become warped or damaged during those winters months due to weather, temperature and humidity
  • Check for cracks then caulk around all damaged area of window, doors and trim
  • Install or replace damaged weather stripping on all doors and windows
  • Consider installing reflective film, sunscreen-fabric curtains or roller shades to windows to keep the heat out
  • If replacing windows this summer consider panes with a low solar heat gain coefficient

 

Check your Air Conditioner and Ceiling Fans

  • Have your air conditioner inspected and cleaned
  • Replace air filters in the house to maintain good air flow
  • Install a programmable thermostat
  • Check ceiling fans to make sure they are in proper working order

 

Check Alarms & Extinguishers

  • Check dates on fire extinguishers and replace if needed
  • Check batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors
  • If your fire extinguishers are older than 10 years you should replace them

 

Don't Forget Outside

  • Check screens around outside of house to prevent rodents and other unwanted pest from getting under house
  • Check and replace fencing that may have been damaged from the winter season
  • Power wash and clean exterior of house as well as surrounding sidewalks and patio areas

 

Monitor Water Usage

  • Check to make sure all sprinklers and drip systems are functioning properly
  • Put sprinklers on a timer

 

Extra Energy Saving Tips

  • Replace standard incandescent light bulbs with with compact florescent light bulbs and save energy .
  • Unplug electronics, battery chargers and other equipment when not in use. These small items use more energy then you think.
